Make a list and narrow that list down to three or four companies that are closest to where you will be picking up the rental car or to the place where you will be going.
Step 2
In your research, find out what kind of requirements are set by the rental company. Many companies require that the car be fueled up before its return to avoid an extra charge to you. Also find out what charges are accrued by returning the car late (or extending the rental period).
Step 3
If your own car insurance covers you when you drive a rental car, then by all means save some money and decline the insurance the rental company offers.
Step 4
When you have chosen the company, then choose a car, and arrange to pick it up. Be sure have your drivers license with you. Also have proof of your car insurance, in the case where you will be declining their insurance. It is necessary to have major credit card in order to rent a car. Often, a debit card may be used to actually pay, but a credit card will still required additionally at the time rental.
Step 5
Always read your contract with the rental company. Ask questions if there is anything you do not understand. It's better to take some time at the rental office to get an understanding of your rental agreement, than to be blindsided by surprises in the small print later if anything in your rental experience goes against your original plans.
