Seat Leon

The SEAT León is a small family car built by the Spanish car manufacturer, and Volkswagen Group subsidiary SEAT, S.A. since October 1998. Both León generations are, or have been built upon two differing variants of the Volkswagen Group A platform, and they also share many other components with the Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Jetta, Audi TT, Audi A3 and Škoda Octavia.

Seat Ibiza

The Seat Ibiza is a car in the European supermini class, constructed by the Spanish car maker SEAT S.A., is SEAT's best-selling car and perhaps the most popular model in the Spanish firm's range. The name Ibiza itself comes from the Spanish island of Ibiza, and its use in SEAT's supermini car inaugurated the firm's new nomenclature in naming models after Spanish locations. It was introduced in the 1984 Paris Motor Show as the first car developed by SEAT as an independent company, though it was designed by SEAT S.A. in collaboration with well-known firms such as Italdesign, Karmann and Porsche. From the Mk2 version onwards, the SEAT company formed part of the German automotive industry concern Volkswagen Group, and all further Ibiza generations, like the rest of the SEAT model range, have been built on Volkswagen Group platforms, parts and technologies.

The Ibiza spans today four generations, among which it has debuted twice - in its second as well as in its fourth generation - a new platform of the Volkswagen Group. All of them were the top seller model in SEAT's range, and a rebadged redeveloped version of the first generation Ibiza remains under licence still in production in China by the Chinese automaker Nanjing Automobile Group. The Ibiza has been available in either three- or five-door hatchback variants, and since 1993, saloon, coupé and estate versions are sold as the SEAT Cordoba. Introduced in the 1984 Paris Motor Show, the SEAT Ibiza Mk1 (code named 021A) entered production in the 'Zona Franca' assembly lines on April 27, 1984 and proved to be a real success for the Spanish firm as it sold 1,342,001 units until the launch of its second generation in 1993. The Ibiza's sales success gave the SEAT marque a platform to build on, as it looked to increase sales in following years.

This version, while it established the now classic Ibiza shape, was advertised as having "Italian styling and German engines" having its bodywork been designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign and was prepared for industrialisation by the German manufacturer Karmann. It was based on the SEAT Ronda, a small family car, with a gearbox and powertrain developed in collaboration with Porsche, thus named under licence System Porsche. By the time Giugiaro was assigned to the Ibiza project, his previous proposal for the second generation of the Volkswagen Golf had been rejected by Volkswagen. So when SEAT approached him with the proposal for a spacious supermini class contender, that particular project was reincarnated as the first generation of the SEAT Ibiza. Using a compact car as basis, in terms of size, it was larger than most superminis like the Ford Fiesta, Peugeot 205 and Opel Corsa, but smaller than any small family car such as the Ford Escort and Vauxhall Astra. The interior space was good but styling was fairly unimaginative even though it was known for having a rather quirky interior instrument layout, marked by a lack of control stalks. The indicators were operated by a rocker-switch, and the headlights by a sliding switch. It had three principal trim levels (L, GL and GLX) with bodyworks of 3 and 5 doors and several versions such as Base, Special, Disc, Chrono, Designer, Fashion, SXi etc. As power outputs dropped due to more stringent emissions requirements, a 1.7-litre version of the engined was developed for the Sportline version. For the same reason, a 109 PS (80 kW) turbocharged version of the 1.5-litre engine was developed for the Swiss market and presented in March 1989.

In the meantime, SEAT had already signed a cooperation agreement with Volkswagen (1982) and in 1986 the German car maker became SEAT's major shareholder. Though a light restyling of the Ibiza Mk1 came in late 1988 with a moderate facelift in the exterior, a less radical interior and many changes in the mechanical parts, the most profound restyling was launched in 1991 under the name New style. Next year in February 1992 SEAT launched the Ibiza "Serie Olímpica" to celebrate SEAT's participation in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona as a sponsor and the SEAT Ibiza Mk1 along with the SEAT Toledo Mk1 became the official cars of the Games. The larger sedan version SEAT Málaga was a closer relative to the Seat Ronda and Fiat Regata, although it shared engines with the Ibiza.

The Ibiza Mk2 (Typ 6K) was the first Ibiza developed and produced under the Volkswagen Group ownership. It was based on the Volkswagen Group A03 platform, which was also used by the Typ 6N Volkswagen Polo Mk3. This Ibiza was available in three- and five-door models, whilst the saloon/coupe variant was known as the SEAT Córdoba, and the estate was known as the SEAT Cordoba Vario. The 6K Ibiza had a minor facelift in 1996, which included changing the general aesthetics of the car, by adding smoother bumpers and changing the grille and headlamps. Other than changing the appearance of the car, the powertrain and running gear changed, with the addition of the 110 kilowatts (150 PS, 148 bhp) 2.0 16v 'ABF' petrol engine, and the demise of the 1.8 16v and the 2.0 16v engines previously in the Volkswagen Golf Mk3.

The 1999 Ibiza Mk2 facelift (Typ 6K2, also known as 6K GP01, and sometimes referred to in the UK as the Mk3) was the second Ibiza to be produced under Volkswagen Group management, and used the underpinnings of the revised Polo Mk3. It suffered a little from 'brand identity' issues on release. Originally seen as a cheap Volkswagen, the launch of the Cupra models, along with success in rallying gave it a much stronger, sporty image, which helped with the alignment of Volkswagen Group's acquisition of Škoda Auto as a budget brand. The Ibiza's 1.05, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 litre petrol, and 1.9 litre Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) and Suction Diesel Injection (SDI) diesel engines were the same as those used in the Volkswagen Polo. The Ibiza's powertrain and running gear was also used in the SEAT Córdoba saloon, estate and coupe. Under Volkswagen's ownership, SEAT was marketed as a sporty and youthful brand, whose cars were sold at competitive prices. The original Ibiza's problems with bad build quality and unreliability were rectified, as the Ibiza proved itself to be one of the best built and most reliable small cars in Europe. SEAT later introduced a more powerful hot hatch, dubbed Cupra, and equipped with a turbocharged 1.8 litre engine, followed by the 1.8 litre turbocharged Cupra R, of which only 1000 units were produced. The main difference between the two was suspension, Brembo four-opposed piston front disc brake calipers, and a power upgrade from 156 PS (115 kW, 154 bhp) to 180 PS (132 kW, 178 bhp) on the Cupra R model. By the time production of the second generation Ibiza/Cordoba ceased during 2002, the range had established itself as one of the most popular superminis in Europe of the past decade.

In 1995, 18 years without getting involved in the World Rally Championship since the 1977 season, SEAT returned with a SEAT Ibiza 1.8 16v driven by Erwin Weber in the Rally of Portugal in the category of 2-wheel drive. That same year, Erwin Weber wins the first place in the 2-wheel drive category in the Acropolis Rally, with Antonio Ríos occupying the second position. The successes of the 1995 season encourage SEAT to participate next year in 1996 in the World Rally Championship in the category of 2.0 litre engine with the SEAT Ibiza Kit Car, a decision which proved to be successful as SEAT won the 1996 FIA 2-litre World Rally Championship title becoming the first brand to win the world title in its debut year. SEAT Sport in the next two seasons reaffirmed its domination winning in 1997 and 1998 two consecutive 2-litre WRC championship titles with drivers Harri Rovanperä, Oriol Gómez, Toni Gardemeister, Jörgen Jonasson and Gwyndaf Evans.

The Ibiza Mk3 (internal designation Typ 6L, and sometimes incorrectly referred to in the United Kingdom as the Mk4) is the third model to be produced under Volkswagen Group ownership. Built on the same PQ24 platform as the Typ 9N Polo, it is intended to have a sporty, performance image, and was styled by the Italian designer Walter de'Silva. The model line up includes two hot hatch variants, the Ibiza FR and Cupra, which compensate for the lack of Polo hot hatch variants (the Polo GTI wasn't launched until 2006). Its production was initially focused in SEAT's main plant in Martorell-Spain, however in September 2002 a decision was taken by the Volkswagen Group, i.e. SEAT's parent company, so that a part of it - up to 50,000 units annually - would be transferred to Volkswagen's own plant in Bratislava-Slovakia. Apart from the more aggressive styling, it is also the largest Ibiza to date, with room for five adults, and a spacious (if rather short) boot. The standard trim level on this model is noticeably higher than previous models. This is regarded by some magazines to be the best supermini, with What Car? magazine calling it 'Car of the Year' in 2003 and their best 'Supermini of the Year' for three years in a row.

SEAT'S LATEST SPECIAL EDITION HAS STAR QUALITY

SEAT is celebrating its partnership with Columbian pop sensation Shakira with the debut in UK showrooms of a special edition SEAT Ibiza that's packed with good stuff'.

The new Ibiza Good Stuff is based on the popular Ibiza 1.4 SE, available in both practical 5dr and sporty SC bodystyles, and boasts a sparkling array of neat extras for its bargain 12,300 RRP (12,710 RRP for the 5dr).

It has been named in recognition of SEAT's sponsorship of Shakira's forthcoming Good Stuff European tour and is available in a selection of smart paint shades including Candy White and Speed Blue.

As befits its moniker, the Ibiza Good Stuff adds a great selection of state-of-the-art extras including a TomTom satnav system and unique SEAT dashboard dock and cradle, black iPod Nano 8GB complete with etched SEAT logo and SEAT branded content, iPod cradle and charger, and Bluetooth hands-free phone system.

On top of this, Good Stuff buyers can look forward to keeping cool this summer thanks to the special edition's climate control system, and looking cool behind the wheel courtesy of the car's 16" Sonda' alloys and dark tinted rear windows.

Of course there's much more to the car than this, as the extras add to the Ibiza's already generous SE spec which includes, as standard, the likes of electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, front fog lights with cornering function, one-touch electric windows, height and reach adjustable steering wheel, six-speaker MP3 compatible AM/FM radio/CD player with combined USB and AUX-in port, trip computer and speed-sensitive electro-mechanical power steering.

Beneath the bonnet lies a newly EU V-compliant 1.4-litre 16V petrol engine driving the front wheels through a crisp five-speed manual gearbox. Offering 85 PS at 5,000 rpm, the engine carries the SEAT from rest to 62 mph in a sprightly 11.8 seconds (12.2 seconds 5dr) and offers a top speed, where legal, of 110 mph (109 mph 5dr). CO2 emissions stand at 142 g/km and, on the combined cycle, the Ibiza Good Stuff's official consumption is put at a frugal 47.1 mpg.

The car's name is taken from one of the tracks on Shakira's latest album, She Wolf, and reflects SEAT's ongoing association with the singer from northern Columbian city of Barranquilla.

Aside from the tour sponsorship and multimedia advertising campaign around the Good Stuff model, SEAT is also actively supporting Shakira's work with the Barefoot Foundation - the charity the singer set up when she was just 18 with the aim of making education for children universally available.

Welcoming the showroom debut of the new car, SEAT UK Ibiza Product Manager Andy McGregor said: Adding these great features to the already generously-specified Ibiza creates a smart, sporty and brilliantly well-equipped supermini.

Our dealers nationwide are already seeing a massive interest in the new model as TV, press and internet advertising campaigns highlight its availability here.'

Video:Seat Leon Cupra R Launched in the U.K.

The Spanish brand has announced today the Seat Leon Cupra R UK price and the fact that the first cars will hit British shores in a few weeks.

The production of the Seat Leon is sending only 500 copies to the U.K. of its hot new Leon Cupra R. The price is $37,350 and the first cars arrive "within weeks," according to the manufacturer.

Standard equipment includes XDS, ESP stability control, TCS traction control and EBA emergency braking assistance, a sporty twin central exit exhaust pipes within a customised rear diffuser, extended rear spoiler, R badging and gloss black highlighting inside and out.

The 2010 Seat Leon Cupra R extracts 265 PS and 350 Nm of torque from a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine, which translates into a top speed of 155 mph, needing 6.2 seconds when accelerating from 0 to 62 mph.

At the same time, the car gets 34.9 mpg, while spewing out only 190 grams of CO2 per kilometer. Other features include XDS, a system that retools the anti-lock brakes to mimic a limited slip differential. Stability control, traction control, and emergency brake assistance is also included.

Press Release

SEAT's scorching Leon Cupra R is here!

Just weeks after SEAT launched its most economical Leon to date in the shape of the latest Ecomotive the stylish Spanish brand is teeing up the showroom debut of its most potent Leon yet: the awesome Cupra R.

While the green-themed new Ecomotive with its road tax-busting CO2 rating of just 99g/km is all about economy and environmental responsibility the 265 PS Cupra R is, undeniably, aimed at ultra-hot hatch enthusiasts with high octane fuel coursing through their veins.

Storming into UK showrooms now, and due to face the glare of the nation's motoring media at a launch event in the next few days, the latest Leon is nothing less than the most powerful SEAT yet offered for sale in the brand's 25-year UK history.

That 265 PS power peak is the product of a tuned 2.0-litre, four cylinder turbocharged petrol engine - revised by the engineers at SEAT's state-of-the-art Technical Centre in Martorell to make it more potent, even, than the current Leon Cupra which is good for a still impressive 240 PS from its 2.0-litre powerplant.

The 16V petrol engine features a new, high-pressure fuel pump injector to satisfy the greater performance demands and allow it to meet strict EU5 emissions standards while revisions to the electronic engine management system, plus increased maximum turbo pressure (1.9 bar at max output and 2.2 bar at max torque, versus 1.8 bar for the 240 PS 2.0-litre TSI in Leon Cupra) complete the powerplant changes beneath the SEAT's svelte clamshell' bonnet.

The torque generated by the new Cupra R's refined and willing engine is, arguably, even more impressive than its power peak. No less than 350 Nm is on offer at just 2,500 rpm - that's a full 50 Nm more than the already muscular Leon Cupra.

Naturally, the challenge of harnessing all this urge in a front-wheel drive set-up has been comprehensively met by SEAT's engineers who have applied a host of effective yet unobtrusive aids to the task.

XDS - SEAT's clever electronic system which uses enhanced ABS functionality to mimic the operation of a traditional limited slip differential - ESP stability control, TCS traction control and EBA emergency braking assistance are among the new car's standard-fit kit and work together to help keep things on the straight and narrow.

The result? Near-supercar levels of acceleration and performance. The benchmark 0-62 mph dash is dispatched in only 6.2 seconds while, where legal, Leon Cupra R drivers can thence press onward to a top speed of 155 mph. Impressive stuff.

As impressive, perhaps, is the new Leon's frugality. Combined economy of 34.9 mpg and CO2 limited to just 190 g/km make the newcomer among the greenest' ultra-hot hatches around. Not green enough to qualify for the brand's Ecomotive badge, of course, but markedly more environmentally responsible than a number of rivals which have CO2 emissions of 220 g/km and above.

The Cupra R's standard six-speed manual gearbox has not escaped the development engineers' attention either: modifications include a shorter throw' (down by six millimetres) to help the driver achieve even faster changes.

As stylish as it is swift, the latest Leon has undergone a number of bespoke styling modifications, inside and out, to elevate its kerbside appeal and deliver the necessary air of exclusivity demanded by what will be an elite hot hatch.

Among the changes are the addition of sporty twin central exit exhaust pipes within a customised rear diffuser, discreet extended high level rear spoiler, subtle R' badging and the careful application of gloss black highlighting inside and out.

The new ebony black front seatbacks even give rear seat occupants a taste of the Cupra R cabin upgrade, while the prominent R' logo incorporated on the seatbacks leaves no one in any doubt about the identity of this super-quick SEAT.

Mighty 19-inch Potenza' wheels, available in traditional silver alloy or contemporary white finish, mark out the R' as something extra special and ensure the car becomes the first SEAT model to use 19-inch wheels on this platform.

UK pricing for the new Leon Cupra R is confirmed at 25,205, production is limited to around 500 in a full year, and the first customer cars are due to be delivered within weeks.

Welcoming the long-awaited arrival of SEAT's most powerful model to date the brand's UK Product Marketing Manager, Andy Medcraft, said: The Leon Cupra R is a special car for us not just because it is the most powerful, fastest and most extreme production model we have yet made.

It also clearly illustrates what makes SEAT stand out from the crowd, and is our brand's familiar 'auto emocin' slogan made metal.

'We're anticipating a huge surge of interest around the showroom debut of this exclusive car and I know our dealers nationwide can't wait to welcome it.'

2010 JE DESIGN Seat Leon FR

JE DESIGN has launched their Seat Leon FR program which brings both performance and styling upgrades. For the petrol version, the TFSI engine of the JE DESIGN Seat Leon FR has been tuned to output 270 hp (199 kW) 355 Nm of torque. The extra juice of the 2010 JE DESIGN Seat Leon FR comes from a re-programmed ECU. The extra horses enable the car to get from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds. The price for this upgrade is 1499 Euros.

The TDI diesel version of the 2010 JE DESIGN Seat Leon FR develops 204 hp (150 kW) and 380 Nm of torque thanks to a re-mapped ECU. The 0 to 100 km/h sprint time drops to 7.6 seconds. The price for the diesel JE DESIGN Seat Leon FR upgrade is 1339 Euros.

The JE DESIGN Seat Leon FR also comes with a new aerodynamics package which includes a new front spoiler with a double lip, side skirts, a rear skirt attachment and a rear diffuser. The JE DESIGN Seat Leon FR features wing-doors, a new exhaust muffler system and 19inch wheels.

The JE DESIGN Seat Leon FR program also includes a new suspension which lowers the ride height by 35 millimeters.

JE DESIGN Press Release:

At Seat, FR stands for Formula Racing. But that was not exciting enough for the JE DESIGN engineers. They turned the new Seat Leon FR into a real sports car which has significantly gained power and also shows it.

The Seat two-liter petrol engine produces 211 hp (155 kW) in the serial model. Due to an optimisation of the control unit, JE DESIGN increases the performance of the TFSI-engine by a good quarter to 270 hp (199 kW). The maximum torque leaps from 280 to 355 Newton metres.

Instead of 7.1 seconds, the JE DESIGN-Leon reaches the 100 kph barrier in already 6.2 seconds. JE DESIGN offers the performance enhancement for 1499 Euros including VAT, assembly and a one-year warranty.

Also the Diesel engine becomes brawnier after JE DESIGN engineers put the finishing touches on their work. The additional electronics Can-Tronic boosts the two-litre TDI from 170 hp (125 kW) to 204 hp (150 kW) and the maximum torque from 350 to 380 Newton metres. Therefore the sprint from 0 to 100 kph is reduced from 8.2 to 7.6 seconds. The price is 1339 Euros and also includes VAT, assembly and warranty.

The Leon FR by JE DESIGN proudly presents this newly acquired power with bold headlight blends (89 Euros), LED daytime running lights (299 Euros) and its aerodynamics pack. The front spoiler with the double lip (279 Euros) draws the vehicle to the road. The side skirts (299 Euros) calm down the air flow which derives from the new rear skirt attachment (299 Euros) and the centre diffuser attachment (99 Euros) at the rear. There, the end muffler with its mighty four-pipe system (899 Euros) unmistakably confirms that this is no serial Seat.

By lowering the vehicle, the car receives a sportier look and a better handling at the same time. Owing to the lowering springs (159 Euros), the Seat is 35 millimetres closer to the road. With the coilover suspension (979 Euros), an individual lowering from 15 to 40 millimetres can be achieved. Therefore, the new 19-inch wheels look especially impressive. The elegant and dynamic design of the Multispoke wheels glows in black and has a polished rim bead. Sport wheels measuring 225/35R 19 ensure a safe contact to the road (entire wheel set for 2930 Euros).

The most significant difference between the JE DESIGN Leon and its serial counterpart shows as soon as the driver opens the doors. The wing door hinges (1499 Euros) first open the doors outwards before they safely glide upwards.

And as if the refinement of the engine and the exterior were not impressive enough, JE DESIGN additionally enhances the interior. Seats, door linings and the centre armrest are all wrapped in noble leather (1599 Euros). Thereby, the colour combination between leather and stitches can be chosen without any additional charges. A two-stage seat heating (379 Euros) is offered as well as an adjustable lordosis support (319 Euros). But the highlight of the interior refinement is not visible: the driver and the passengers can indulge in the luxury of the massage system in the seats which offers twelve programmes (429 Euros). Moreover, the refiner offers to embroider a logo into the back rests (79 Euros) according to the wishes of the customer.

Moreover, the refining experts from Leingarten also offer noble leather for the steering wheel (399 Euros), the gear shift skirt and the hand brake cuff (together for 179 Euros).

With the Leon FR, JE DESIGN once again confirms its competence in refining Seat automobiles. With the performance enhancement, the entire aerodynamics pack and a keen eye for details, the engineers developed a dynamic and overall harmonious automobile.
